Fantastic Vacation to Turkey

Is a Fantastic Vacation to Turkey on Your List for 2023?  Maybe it should be!

A vacation to Turkey is a great way to celebrate the end of the pandemic that has gripped the world for the past two years.  It’s time to stretch your wings with a truly unique trip.

Ancient civilization

Mt. Nemrut

Turkey, or more accurately, the Republic of Turkey, is one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. As one of the world’s first permanently settled regions, modern Turkey was the home of ancient Neolithic sites, such as Göbekli Tepe.  It was inhabited by a number of ancients civilizations, like the Hattians, Anatolians, Mycenaean Greeks and others.

The Republic of Turkey is a country of many archaeological wonders from the near to distant past. It is well worth the time involved to study the history, architecture, and archaeology of the region before you visit.  But be careful!  Your list of places and things to see might be longer than you can fit on a single trip!

Ankara

The capital of Turkey is Ankara, a name that conjures up exciting and romantic pictures of ancient heroes and epic battles.  Ankara was the capital of the ancient Celtic state of Galatia, which existed from 280 to 64 BC.  It became the Roman province of Galatia from 25 BC right up to the 7th century.  It is an ancient city with a large number or archaeological sites.  These include Haitian, Lydian, Phrygian, Galatian, Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman sites.

Ancient Buildings

The city was made the Ottoman capital from 1393 to the late 15th century, then again from 1867 until 1922. The historical center of the city is a hill that rises 500 feet above the Ankara River. The ruins of Ankara Castle sit atop the hill.  Ankara has many amazing archaeological sites throughout.

The many wonders of Turkey

Of course, there are many wonders to see in Turkey.  The archaeological and architectural sites are many and amazing.  But the geography of the country is also well worth visiting for.  With seven geographical regions, it is incredibly diverse.

In fact, Turkey is what is referred to as a transcontinental country, bridging Western Asia and Southeastern Europe.  97% of the country’s territory is in Asian Turkey, which is separated from European Turkey by the Bosphorus, the Dardanelles, and the Sea of Marmara. Only a very small part of the country is in European Turkey.

Turkey has many miles of coastline, with the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.  The entire Sea of Marmara is contained within its borders in the northwest.

The country is very rugged with many mountains, as well as plateaus and plains.  The famous region of Cappadocia is well known for its many homes and edifices carved out of the rugged landscape, itself.

Climate

The climate of the country makes a vacation to Turkey a wonderful choice at any time of the year.  With the Mediterranean climate in the south, to the changing seasons of the high mountains in the interior, there is always somewhere to suit the tastes anyone.

Boasting some of the best ski resorts in the world, Turkey is one of the few places in the world where you can ski in the mountains and swim at the beach on the same day!

Fabulous food!

Food is always an important element of any trip outside your own country, and it’s again an important consideration on a vacation to Turkey.  The good news is, you won’t be disappointed!  Turkish Cuisine has its roots in the Ottoman Empire and is often referred to simply as Ottoman cuisine.  It includes a mouthwatering array of dazzling dishes from every era that have found their place into Ottoman cuisine.
